| Denniston 18
February 2001. Site being prepared for the"log over the chasm" scene.
The "chasm" is a disused cutting, excavated early last century to rail coal down
the hill. Denniston is a coal mining "ghost town" located on a plateau 2000ft
above sea level, 10 miles north from Westport, on the Westcoast of South Island, New
Zealand. |

The West Coast enjoys a
subtropical climate and higher rainfall, and thus, as evidenced in the accompanying
photos, mud can sometimes slow site preperation. Generally the days are warm and sunny. |
| Where possible, local
labour, machinery etc, has been used, giving a much needed boost to the local economy. |

A log ready to placed
across the "chasm" |
| Rugged granite outcrops weathered
into grotesque and fantastic forms dominate rain forest clad hills making this an ideal
setting for the "lost world" plateau scenes. This view from the
"chasm" looking north to Mt Frederick. |
